Are You Experienced is made almost entirely out of broken dishes. About the only pieces that are not broken dishes are the toy Fender guitar and the corner pieces and quarter round tile pieces on the outside. The piece won first prize for 2-Dimensional Recycled Material Art at the 2006 San Diego County Fair. The image in the sun, from the Are You Experience? album cover, was taken from a coffee mug. The shading in Jimi's face is achieved by using the labels printed on the bottoms of plates.
